With the aging of the American population, neurological disorders are increasing in prevalemce. The National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke reports that Alzheimer's disease alone has more than doubled in the US since 1980 to an estimated 4.5 million people, and Multiple Sclerosis cases have increased by 50 percent. Sixty thousand new cases of Parkinson's are diagnosed annually, and stroke remains America's third leading cause of death and one of the main causes of long-term disability, according to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
To provide more convenient access to diagnoses and treatment for these and other disorders, Southwest General offers an expanding range of neurological services through our Neuroscience Program. We treat patients with many kinds of neurological disorders---from epilepsy to Parkinson's, tremors, headaches, multiple sclerosis and stroke. We also work in collaboration with pulmonoligists and other specialities to offer comprehensive sleep studies and diagnose and treat a variety of sleep disorders.
