Expansion of Southwest General’s Oakview Behavioral Health Services

Southwest General’s Oakview Behavioral Health Services Completes Expansion Project

In April 2019, Southwest General’s Oakview Behavioral Health Services Inpatient Facility embarked on a $6.5 million capital improvement project. The now completed project not only enhanced the capacity for treating psychiatric patients—addressing a critical need for behavioral health services in the region—but also enhanced safety measures for patients and staff.

Project enhancements include:

  • Conversion of semi-private patient rooms to private rooms (increasing the number of bed availability for inpatient care to 20)
  • Development of a multi-sensory room to help calm patients and reduce the risk of violence to themselves or others
  • Renovation of the current building infrastructure as the building was constructed more than 29 years ago

The project also included the addition of office space for Southwest General Medical Group’s Behavioral Health practice. This addition brings clinical staff and patients closer together to enhance care.

“Many hospitals are looking to remove themselves from the business of psychiatry,” said Mike Waggoner, MSN, RN, director, Oakview Behavioral Health Services. “It’s quite the opposite for us at Southwest General. We are continuing to grow and invest in our Behavioral Health programs and to position the hospital as the premier provider of comprehensive behavioral health services in Northeast Ohio.”
