COPD Treatment

What is COPD?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is not a single disease but rather a group of lung diseases that blocks airflow as you exhale and makes it increasingly difficult to breathe.

COPD cannot be treated as if it's just one problem in need of one treatment. Therefore, the COPD Outpatient Center offers patients comprehensive education and reinforcement of self care for their multiple disease symptoms to improve quality of life.

Why should I go to the COPD Outpatient Center?

COPD is a complex and progressive disease. Every time a patient with COPD experiences acute difficulty breathing and returns to the hospital, a portion of your lung function disappears. The COPD Outpatient Center will help you stay out of the hospital and ensure you are receiving the most benefit from your and treatments. Additionally, the COPD Outpatient Center works with your physician to better control breathing problems, thereby avoiding hospital visits. A physician referral is necessary to come to the Center.

What are the goals of the COPD Outpatient Center?

The Center has been carefully designed to meet the needs of the COPD patients and uses the standards from the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD). The Center incorporates variety of resources in the outpatient setting to:

  • Reduce your chance of being admitted to the hospital for COPD
  • Make sure you receive the right equipment and medication(s) to fit your individual needs
  • Detect and address when your COPD worsens or “flares up”
  • Provide education to you and your family members
  • Help with the affordability of medications
  • Improve your quality of life
